Issues Demanding for Social Change in Nigeria

Image
One of the issues affecting Nigerians and every other person out there that I want to talk about today is “Mental health” Mental Health  includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being . It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. This is a big challenge in Africa as most people don`t know about mental health or care little about it. While a few others believe mental health is for those going through heartbreak or one issue or the other. But the truth is, mental health is for everyone. Another misconception is that mental health comes as a result of depression only. It is paramount to talk about this in Africa, where people work 9-5 without breaks in between, where people get stressed out from spending hours in traffic or in a toxic work environment. Most people especially...

MY NYSC EXPERIENCE

Image
It was a horrible night for me when my friend @Stanley Uchehara called me to break the news of my posting to me. The network was very bad that night from my end and my friend Stanley decided to help me check my call-up letter for me after I sent him all my details. Before that very day, I had a dream and saw myself in an environment inhabited by Northerners, I woke up from that dream and told my mom about it, we prayed, kabashed, and even faster about it, I never wanted to serve in the North.   My mom and everyone around me preferred the south or even West for me, having heard nice things about the Yoruba from my mom,(GIVEN THE FACT THAT MY MOM GROW UP IN A YORUBA LAND, IBADAN PRECISELY) I was eager to be there and have a first-hand experience. Stanley sent me a screenshot of the call-up letter on Whatsapp and I refused to believe my eyes, having seen CONGRATULATIONS!! WELCOME TO   BIRNIN KEBBI. How could God do this to me after having served him diligently? w...

Okigwe Crisis: A repeating history of the Zaki Biam massacre?

It’s over 22 years since the Zaki Biam massacre,  (also known as  The Zaki-Biam Invasion  or  Operation No Living Thing ) Which saw the mass execution of hundreds of unarmed Tiv civilians by the  Nigerian Army  between 20 – 24 October 2001 .   The incident left sad prints on the community which its citizens and indigenes won`t ever forget as it comes with sad tales of the loss of life and property. Economic and infrastructural development are still gradually taking place in these communities as the effect of the execution lingers. The  massacre  was a surreptitious operation of the Nigerian army to avenge the killing of 19 soldiers, whose mutilated bodies were found on 12 October 2001, near some Tiv villages in  Benue State .  However, history is repeating itself after 22 years, as OKIGWE one of the major geo-politically zones in Imo state is reportedly under siege by the Nigerian army. Okigwe is one of the 27 loca...

Is this the Nigeria we prayed for

Image
What has become of our great nation, with good people?   Who did this to our great nation?   Are the gods angry with us?   Who is to blame?   Some years back, we were all praying and declaring that Nigeria our dear country will be better in the near future, we declared the coming years as the best and made plans of what to achieve in these years with our loved ones. Little did we know that this year’s we prayed and declared upon was going to take our loved ones away from us.   Some of them were shot in our eyes, some of them were brought back home dead, and some, we didn’t even see their dead bodies.   We heard of them dying through a stray bullet, being shot by people who were supposed to protect their lives and properties, who are we to blame? The system, or the people piloting the system? It is saddening that we can’t do anything to bring justice to their departed souls, this is the system we found ourselves in.   We had plans w...

THE MEDIA AS THE FOURTH ESTATE OF THE REALM

Image
The political structure of many societies is moving towards democracy a system of government that supports the governance of the people, by the people, and for the people.   Democracy, however, remains a mirage until the freedom of the press is achievable.   The media as the fourth estate of the realm, remain one of the most vital channels through which the provisions made for the freedom of expression and information are accessed. which are often seen as fulfilling the vitality and important role of the fourth estate, the guardians of democracy and defenders of the public interest. The power of the press comes from its ability to withhold or give out information. In other words, the role of giving accurate information to the Nigerian citizenry is one of the major roles of the Nigerian mass media. The role of the mass media as the “fourth estate” of the realm implies that the media is also a lawmaker itself. Democracy engenders practices such as the rule o...
