Issues Demanding for Social Change in Nigeria
One of the issues affecting Nigerians and every other person out there that I want to talk about today is “Mental health”
Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act.
It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
This is a big challenge in Africa as most people don`t know about mental health or care little about it.
While a few others believe mental health is for those going through heartbreak or one issue or the other. But the truth is, mental health is for everyone. Another misconception is that mental health comes as a result of depression only.
It is paramount to talk about this in Africa, where people work 9-5 without breaks in between, where people get stressed out from spending hours in traffic or in a toxic work environment.
Most people especially in Africa are in marriages they are not happy about, just for society's validation and family reputation, they remain in it, not minding their mental health.
So many kids grow up in a family without love or care which affects their personality in society.
These and many more let us know that mental health issues are not for a particular set of people but for everyone.
In Nigeria, many factors cause depression, ranging from unemployment or underemployment, unfavorable government policies, police brutality, etc.
These factors and more have led a good number of Nigerians into depression, and some of them have taken drastic decisions out of frustration.
No day passes by without you hearing a single case of suicide or mental issues as a result of depression.
Through my social change campaign, I wish to let people know that suicide is not the best option. I wish to establish a helpline that can help a depressed soul or anyone going through depression at least in my locality, if not in the whole country call and have a shoulder to lean on and pour it all out.
I desire to see an end to depression and help curtail mental health challenges in my locality, in Nigeria, and in Africa as a whole.
