Whisper to Humanity Hosts Workshop Aimed At Empowering Educators and Learners for Transformative Education
Whisper to Humanity, a dedicated nonprofit organization focused on social change, organized a two-day workshop on October 25th and 26th, 2024, at Kelvic Suites, Owerri.
The workshop, with title Empowering Educators and Learners for Transformative Education, aimed to enhance the capacity of both teachers and students across Imo State by providing tools and strategies that go beyond traditional classroom teaching.
This transformative event featured notable education stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Education, Prof. John Cliff, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Chinyere Ibeh.
During her address, Mrs. Ibeh underscored the Imo State government’s commitment to advancing education, expressing hope that this initiative would mark the beginning of more collaborations geared toward uplifting the quality of education in the state.
On the second day of the workshop, Hon. Amb. Uju Onwudiwe, former representative of the Njaba Local Government Area in the Imo State House of Assembly, joined the gathering.
Hon. Onwudiwe applauded the initiative, calling for even more of such collaborative programs. She emphasized the importance of exposing schoolchildren to diverse learning experiences beyond the four walls of their classrooms, highlighting the lasting benefits of experiential education.
In a breakout session designed to engage students directly, participants formed groups with unique names, each working to create a vision of their “dream school.”
Here, they outlined the challenges they currently face in their educational environments, which include a lack of conducive learning spaces, limited access to educational resources, inadequate facilities, insufficient teacher support, and the absence of modern learning tools and extracurricular programs.
Through their creative “dream school” projects, students expressed their aspirations for schools equipped with better infrastructure, digital learning aids, recreational facilities, and a curriculum that embraces skills like critical thinking and creativity.
The founder of Whisper to Humanity, Maryjacob Okwuosa, expressed her vision of redefining the educational landscape in Imo State through this initiative.
Driven by a deep commitment to nurturing empowered learners and educators, Okwuosa emphasized that fostering critical thinking, creativity, and leadership in students is essential for building a resilient and progressive society.
The workshop also saw active participation from various secondary schools, including Imerinwe Girls Secondary School, Ngor Okpala High School, Nnorie Secondary Technical School, Umuowa Community Comprehensive School, Logara High School, Nguru Umuaro Community Secondary School, Obiangwu Comprehensive Secondary School, and Comprehensive Secondary School Nkume. Teachers and students from these institutions engaged in hands-on sessions that covered innovative teaching methods and learner-centered approaches.
It was an amazing experience. Thank you Blessing, for your excellent reportage of this awesome outing.
