Sit at Home Order: South East Nigeria
In
southeastern Nigeria, which comprises Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Abia, and Anambra,
there is an agitation for a referendum.
This is
pioneered by a group known as the Indigenous people of Biafra.
This group
was headed by a man known as Nnamdi Kanu who was also the director of a United
Kingdom-registered radio station named Radio Biafra; the station was used to
propagate the Biafran referendum.
Kanu was
arrested on treason charges in Lagos, Nigeria on 14 October 2015 and was
detained for more than a year.
Various
court orders ruled for his release, but none was taken into action, which
provoked his supporter to agitate for his release, giving birth to the “sit at
home order”
Every Monday
of the week, all inhabitants of the 5 eastern states mentioned above are
expected to stay at home, no school, no work, no business, and no market.
For the
members of the Indigenous people of Biafra, this is a way to show their grief
over the unlawful detention of their boss and not heeding court rulings.
The state
governments have made different appeals to people to go about their lawful
businesses on this said day, but the people have chosen what`s best for them,
which is sitting at home as warned.
Looking at
the economic sabotage of this order, a lot of businesses lose tons of
thousands, or millions as a result of this order.
The country
as a whole loses too, because goods and services seize to flow in or out of
these states on the said day, thereby affecting the gross domestic products of
the nation.
We are
looking forward to the new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinibu looking into their agitation and finding a peaceful way to resolve the issues and
allow South Easterners the privilege to breathe and be free from fear of the
unknown and other insecurity issues.
